Rumi was a 13th-century Persian poet, jurist, Islamic scholar, theologian, and Sufi mystic. He was born in 1207 in Balkh, which is now part of Afghanistan, and he later settled in Konya, Turkey, where he spent most of his life. Rumi is best known for his poetry and writings, which have had a profound influence on Persian and Islamic literature.
Rumi's poetry, particularly his Mathnawi (or Masnavi), is celebrated for its spiritual and philosophical themes. His works often explore the concept of divine love and the relationship between the individual soul and the divine. Rumi's poetry emphasizes the importance of self-discovery, inner transformation, and the quest for spiritual enlightenment.
One of Rumi's most famous works is the "Divan-e Shams-e Tabrizi," a collection of lyrical poems dedicated to his spiritual teacher and close companion, Shams Tabrizi. These poems reflect Rumi's deep spiritual journey and his intense longing for union with the divine.
Rumi's writings transcend cultural and religious boundaries and continue to be widely read and appreciated around the world. His poetry has been translated into numerous languages, making it accessible to a global audience. Rumi's influence extends beyond literature, as his teachings have inspired countless individuals on their own spiritual quests and journeys of self-discovery.

I was initially introduced to Rumi in 2021 when a friend mentioned a halal cafe located on a rooftop bar. The idea of a rooftop setting immediately piqued my interest. At that time, it shared its space with a Teppanyaki restaurant, and the location was relatively quiet and undiscovered. The cafe's interior was inviting, with features such as vinyl records, books, board games, and more. Rumi The Poet's Cup used to be my favorite spot for drinks. I remember when they first started, they had a small shop on a rooftop cafe, and now they have their own dedicated space. While their prices can be a bit on the expensive side, the portions are generous, making it worth the cost. Over time, Rumi Cafe has become increasingly popular, and it's always bustling with customers. As a loyal customer, I'm delighted to see their growth and expansion. As the cafe grows, it's adopting a more pub-like ambiance. It's filled with lively music, and we find ourselves needing to raise our voices a bit when having a meal with friends.
However, my recent experience was a bit disappointing due to the overcrowding. I had to order my drinks to-go because there were no available seats, and I had to wait outside for a table to open up. Within just 10 minutes of securing a table, the staff informed us that we had only 5 minutes left. I noticed that some other customers, possibly regulars or influencers, were allowed to stay for over an hour. This seemed a bit unfair to me. I understand the need to manage space and control the crowd, but I hope they can implement a fairer system for all customers.
Despite its minor shortcomings, Rumi continues to evolve and enhance its offerings.
By 2024, the café has diversified its services by organising various events, ranging from chess nights to blind date gatherings. This expansion reflects Rumi's proactive marketing approach, which aims to engage patrons and foster a welcoming atmosphere. As a result, the café has attracted a significant influx of customers and tourists, contributing to its bustling ambiance. Whenever I stroll along Haji Lane, I often observe the lively crowds congregating at Rumi, which is a testament to its growing popularity. The café has effectively established itself as a prominent destination, thanks to its innovative strategies and dedication to customer satisfaction.
